A new U.S. tariff rule is changing the game for Amazon sellers. On April 2, 2026, the White House signed a new order on steel, aluminum, and copper imports. The new rule took effect on April 6, 2026. Before, sellers paid tariffs only on the metal part of a product. Now, sellers pay a 25% tariff on the full value of the product. This is a big change for metal enclosure amazon listings.
Why Is This Change So Big?
Under the old rule, a $100 metal enclosure with $20 of steel paid a $10 tariff. Under the new rule, the same box pays a $25 tariff. That is a 150% increase. For heavy metal products, the difference is even larger. Most metal enclosures are more than 85% metal by weight. So the 15% low-metal exemption does not help. Sellers cannot avoid this cost easily.

What Does This Mean for Amazon Sellers?
Amazon sellers face three hard choices. First, they can raise prices. But higher prices may push buyers to other sellers. Second, they can absorb the cost. But this cuts deep into profit margins. Third, they can find new suppliers. But finding a compliant supplier takes time.
The timing is also bad. Amazon announced FBA fuel surcharges in the same month. Many warehouses stopped receiving goods. So sellers face higher tariffs and higher shipping costs at the same time.
Compliance Risks Are Growing Too
Tariffs are not the only problem. Amazon and UL filed a lawsuit in January 2026 against companies that sold products with fake UL marks. On July 6, 2026, the court signed a permanent injunction. The court banned these companies from importing or selling products with unauthorized UL marks. This case involved e-bikes. But the same risk applies to electrical enclosures and control panels.
Buyers on Amazon now ask harder questions. Does the product have a real UL file number? Can the factory be verified? Can the supplier show the UL standard that applies? If a seller cannot answer these questions, the listing may be removed.

What Should Buyers and Sellers Do?
Sellers should do three things now. First, recalculate the landed cost with the new full-value tariff. Second, verify the UL certification of every product. Third, find a manufacturing partner who understands compliance and can control costs.
