Safety comes first
Data centers have high voltages and high currents. An enclosure must contain any faults. It must stop sparks from spreading. This protects the equipment. It also protects workers.
The enclosure should meet safety standards. In the US, UL 891 and UL 1558 are common. In Europe, IEC 61439 is the standard. These standards test for short circuits and heat buildup. An enclosure that passes these tests is safe for data centers.
Choose the right material
The material decides how strong and long‑lasting the enclosure is. Stainless steel is a strong option. It resists rust and heat. It lasts a long time. Grade 304 stainless steel works for most data centers.
Carbon steel with a powder coat is also common. It costs less than stainless steel. It works well in clean, dry places. But it does not resist rust as well.

Busbars need good support

Every metal enclosure must be grounded. Grounding gives a safe path for fault currents. It protects people and equipment.
The enclosure must have ground terminals. These terminals should be easy to reach. The ground connection must be strong and secure. A poor ground is dangerous.
Door design and access
Workers need to open the enclosure. They need to reach breakers and switches. The door should open easily. It should also lock. This stops unauthorized entry.
Some enclosures have windows. These let workers see inside without opening the door. This is safer. It also saves time during checks.
Size and space limits
Data centers have limited space. The enclosure must fit in the available area. It must also leave room for cables and maintenance.
Custom sizes are often needed. A standard enclosure may not fit. A maker that offers custom sizes is helpful.
Rules and standards
